Fisheries Management Plans

Habitat surveys, along with juvenile fish surveys and an assessment of fish catches, provided a basis for the preparation of WRFT Fishery Management Plans (FMPs). FMPs were drafted between 2000 and 2006 for the rivers Kanaird, Ullapool, Broom, Dundonnell, Gruinard, Ewe, Balgy, Carron and Ling. Detailed management reports have been prepared for many other rivers where fishery proprietors value a science-based fisheries management approach.

Some estates carry out stocking programmes using locally native broodstocks to supplement natural recruitment of salmon, especially in areas subject to severe 'redd washout' (where wild-spawned eggs may be washed away during the winter). In recent years, rainfall events have become more severe and spates more erosive, causing much destruction. Longer-term approaches to problems associated with habitat instability are required which address issues, such as grazing pressure and nutrient (fertility) management at catchment scale. Where soils are well developed and vegetation is strongly rooted, stream banks are better able to resist erosion.

In 2008 a Fisheries Management Plan will be further developed for the Wester Ross Fisheries Trust area with grant support from the Scottish Government.
